Model 200 Liquid Helium Monitor
The Model 200 is a liquid helium point monitor that gives the user an accurate indication
of liquid or gaseous helium. The point sensor is a very small, sensitive device which is
used to distinguish between cold helium gas and liquid helium while requiring a minimum of
power. The control unit is an ergonomic, rugged, lightweight device having a power switch
on the rear panel and a push-button MODE switch, one red LED, and one green LED on its
exterior. The red LED is flashed at about a 1 Hz rate (to conserve power) and indicates
when the sensor is in gas. The green LED is flashed to indicate that the sensor is in
liquid. The Model 200 is configured at the factory to power down if the push-button is not
depressed for 12 hours.
The Model 200 uses a standard nine-volt alkaline battery. Units
are shipped from the factory with a fresh battery installed. Batteries can be expected to
last 500 to 600 operating hours and can be easily replaced by the user. The battery is
checked continuously while the unit is on, and two beeps will be sounded at 10 to 30
second intervals if the battery is low, indicating that it must be replaced.
The Model 200 will detect the helium liquid/gas interface within +/- 0.1 inches. The fast response time makes this an ideal system to integrate into liquid helium transfer lines. Liquid helium transfer lines are available with the Model 200 system installed to detect when a storage dewar empties. This prevents the user from accidentally introducing warm helium gas into a magnet system - potentially quenching the magnet.
Other common uses for the Model 200 include dip point measurements of liquid helium level.
Model 250 Liquid Nitrogen Monitor
The Model 250 Liquid Nitrogen Monitor is similar to the Model 200 in operation.
The Model 250 features a user settable sample interval from 3.5 seconds to 12 hours. This is accomplished by setting jumpers inside the unit. This allows the user to extend battery life if the unit is monitoring a LN2 vessel that has very low boiloff. For example, if the Model 250 is set to sample once every 12 hours, the estimated battery life is 12,537 hours, or approximately 17 months.
The LED's can be configured to remain on continuously if the 3.5 second sample interval is selected. This is an ideal mode for higher boiloff systems, or systems that must be closely monitored. With the Model 250's optional wall-powered adapter, battery life concerns in this mode do not apply.
